Celebrating the Rich Tapestry of Our Past: Delve into the Stories That Shaped Geopark Kebumen.

Kebumen Geopark

The name Kebumen come from “Kabumian”, the area where Kyai Bumi or Prince Bumidirdjo lived. Kabumian or commonly called earth science is expected to be a light source of knowledge about the earth which sincerely presents Geological, Biological and Cultural diversity to humans, like mother’s love for the children.

The history of the Kebumen Geopark can be traced back to 2004 when the President of the Republic of Indonesia designated the South Gombong Karst Landscape Area (KBAK) as a sustainable development area. In 2006, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) designated the Karangsambung area as a Geological Nature Reserve Area.

In 2018 the Kebumen Regency Government proposed the establishment of the Karangsambung – Karangbolong Geopark which was later designated as a National Geopark on November 30 2018. At that time the Karangsambung – Karangbolong Geopark covered an area of 543,599 Km2 covering 12 Districts with 117 Villages. This area covers the North, Central and Karst areas in the South with varying morphologies ranging from hills, valleys, plains to beaches.

In 2023, the Kebumen Regency Government through Perbup no. 25 of 2023 changes the name to Geopark Kebumen. This change coincides with the expansion of the geopark area with a land area of 1,138.70 square kilometers and sea area of 21.98 square kilometers. Within the geopark, there are 22 sub-districts with 374 villages.
